What is a HEPA Filter?

This is an international standard for a specific type of air filter capable of removing over 95% of airborne particles from the atmosphere. Vacuum cleaners with a HEPA filter are designed to remove dust mite, fine dust and dirt , pollen and other microscopic debris more effectively than a regular vacuum cleaner. HEPA vacuums are therefore very useful for people who suffer from asthma and other airborne allergies. Most vacuum cleaning manufacturers offer a range of HEPA models, which are always branded as such. Some HEPA filters are washable and usually cost between $15 - $50 to replace.

Turbo Head or Power Head?

Power Head – Motor driven
Turbo Head – Suction driven

Power heads are fast becoming a thing of the past with most major manufactures moving away from power heads to the lighter and more trouble free turbo head. Power heads have a rotating brush powered by a motor to give easier cleaning on carpet. They easily brush fluff, pet hair, long hair and sock fluff easily from the top of the pile and they also assist in creating airflow deep into the pile of your carpet, therefore increasing the amount of dirt removal from deep in the pile. Turbo heads have a rotation driven by the suction of the vacuum cleaner. In the past turbo heads have performed fairly averagely, but in the last 4-5 years with the introduction of much higher performing vacuum cleaners turbo heads also perform much better and are becoming the preference.

Which Vacuum Is Right For Me?

The answer is not a straightforward one, as your specific needs will be different than other people. We have designed this site to allow you to compare many different brands at once, and also to quickly locate replacement parts like bags and filters for your existing machine. The main issues to think about are: type of floor – carpet/hard floor, bag or bagless, is there a major cleaning problem such as pet hair, asthma allergies, back and shoulders pain when vacuuming, etc. It's important to do some research before buying to guarantee your happiness with the vacuum you choose. Don't think of it simply as a cleaner, think of it as an investment in the health of all your family members.

What are cordless vacuums used for?

Cordless hand held vacuums offer both convenience and flexibility since you can carry them practically anywhere, without the inconvenience of a long electric cord. They are not necessarily designed to replace your full size vacuum cleaner. A cordless vacuum cleaner comes in a variety of sizes, with a variety of different features, as well as a variety of different price ranges. Cordless models are good for sweeping vinyl floors, wood floors, tiles floors and even carpets. Cordless hand vacuums typically get their power from some type of battery. Most come with rechargeable batteries that plug into a charger when not in use. This will ensure the vacuum is ready anytime you need it. Depending on the vacuum cleaner, batteries will last anywhere from 10 -20 minutes. Be sure to follow the manufactures recommendations as to how long and how often to charge the vacuum. Smaller hand held vacuums can be mounted to a wall or kept next to a desk or even in a work shop. As well, since most are fairly inexpensive, you can purchase several to leave throughout the house. So no matter what area of the house or floor you are on, you will always have a vacuum cleaner within reach.

Should I fix my old vacuum or replace it ?

The 3 major questions you need to ask yourself are:
1. Do I like my current vacuum cleaner ?
If there are things that you don’t like about your vacuum cleaner then you should look at a replacement vacuum cleaner that is nicer to use. Take the chore out of the job.
2. Is the fix up cost close to the cost to replace the machine ?
Sometimes the cost of replacement parts can be expensive. If your machine originally cost less then $200 then in most cases the cost of parts and the labour to fix the vacuum will be more than a replacement.
How old is my vacuum cleaner?
If your vacuum cleaner is a few years old then you may find if you fix the immediate problem in the near future more problems will arise.
